Stephanie Buhmann was born in Hamburg, Germany in 1977 and has been based in New York City since 1998. She received her PhD from the Humboldt-Universität of Berlin in 2021, as well as a Master in the History of Art, Architecture and Design and a B.F.A. from Pratt Institute, New York (both in 2002). She has written extensively on visual art and her many essays and reviews have appeared in a variety of books, international art magazines, and newspapers. Besides having curated dozens of exhibitions for the past twenty years, she has conducted over ninety published interviews with contemporary artists, including Mark Dion, Katharina Grosse, Julie Mehretu, Shirin Neshat and Kiki Smith. She has received awards from the Kress Foundation, the Arp Foundation, the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation, Stiftung Kunstfonds, the Humboldt-Universität of Berlin, and the Wyeth Foundation, among others.

Ongoing and Recent

In 2013, Stephanie Buhmann conceived of an ongoing conversation series focused on female artists of different generations working in diverse media. In this context, she has released five books with The Green Box, Berlin to date: New York Studio Conversations (2016), Berlin Studio Conversations (2017), New York Studio Conversations - Part II (2018), Los Angeles Studio Conversations (2019), and Rheinland Studio Conversations (2021). In 2022, her sixth book with The Green Box was published: Frederick Kiesler: Galaxies. She currently holds the position of Head of Visual Arts, Architecture and Design at the Austrian Cultural Forum New York and serves as Council to The Estate of Frederick Kiesler New York.
